According to a report of CANMET Energy, Canada has over 300 remote communities with at least 10 inhabitants or more that make up a population of about 200,000. These permanent settlements and business operations are not connected to the electrical or gas grids. Many of these communities and businesses are dependent on imported energy, which is sold to them at prices, which can be up to ten times higher than the prices of energy in the highly populated metro areas of urban Canada. Currently, most of these remote communities generate their electricity through diesel generators at costs between 30-50Cent/kWh, while some pay still more than that.
Even though most communities have not yet taken advantage of green, clean energy technologies until today, renewable energy resources are available and an untapped potential exists. Through technology and knowledge transfer it is no longer an unsolvable problem to meet the energy demands and requirements of Canada’s remote communities. Green Tech Avenue and its partners are qualified to supply clean energy technology to generate stable, reliable clean power in a more cost effective way, thus empowering remote communities to substitute diesel generators with green alternatives allowing them to save money and to reduce their carbon foot print at same time.

Challenges facing remote communities are:

  • Dependency on imported energy and external energy supplier
  • High costs and risks of energy transportation
  • High environmental burden due to the emission of fossil fuels
  • Need for firm, robust and reliable power sources
  • Need for substitution of diesel generators with green alternatives
